ABOUT US
Captain John Baptiste Ford (1811-1903) established the Michigan Alkali Company along the Detroit River in 1893. Ford had financial interests in several glass companies and chose the site for its proximity to the resources needed to produce sodium carbonate, a main ingredient in glassmaking. Water from the Detroit River was used to extract the salt as a solution. The salt was used with limestone to produce a variety of sodium-based consumer and industrial products.
In the early years, Michigan Alkali Company products included sodium carbonate, baking soda, and bleach.
In 1943, Michigan Alkali Company merged with JB Ford Company Glass works to become Wyandotte Chemical Corporation.
Developing over 50 years specialized cleaning products for the industry, with more than 200 establishments, being the leading company worldwide.
In 1969 Wyandotte Chemicals Corporation became part of the BASF group of companies, based in Germany, with the brand disappearing over the years ...
